Things To Do Around Town This Spring
Spring is in the air, and that means warm weather, bright sunshine and longer days to get out and explore our beautiful, coastal region. There’s so much to do in and around Hampton Roads in springtime, and we make it our job to keep you in the know. Whether you like to get and play with the entire family, or with coworkers, neighbors or your special someone, there are fun, friendly and exciting ways to experience the best of our area, all season long!
Springtime festivities kick off with Historic Garden Week and the Spring Native Plant Sale, and these are two perfect events for giving you home and patio decorating ideas and inspiration. Next up is the Newport News Children’s Festival and the Blues, Brews & BBQ fest, both fun ways to relax and kick back with the ones you love.

Historic Garden Week
Wednesday, April 25th, join the Annual Historic Garden Week experience as you walk through historic homes located on Hampton’s historic waterfront. Get an up close view of these beautifully designed and constructed homes and learn about their compelling history and past. Open from 10 am to 5 pm, you’ll have all day to explore!
Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival
On April 27th, don your finest and head to the Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center for the 20th Annual Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival, with a live musical performance by Jennifer Holliday. Over the last two decades, the Ella Fitzgerald Music Fest has brought world-renowned, iconic Jazz musicians to Newport News to celebrate and commemorate the First Lady of Song.
Spring Native Plant Sale
Saturday, April 28th, gather up your gaggle and travel to the nearby Virginia Living Museum for an epic plant sale that will both inspire and delight! Choose from an enormous variety of native plants and make your patio garden truly stand out.
Newport News Children’s Festival
On Saturday, May 5th, pack up the family and head to Newport New Park for the 29th Annual Newport News Children’s Festival of Friends. Children can meet their favorite characters from beloved books, explore the petting zoo, make friends in the preschool play area and witness hilarious juggling and comedy performances. Hands-on activities, crafts, pony rides and so much more make this an event your kids won’t want to miss!
Blues, Brews & BBQ
Journey to nearby Riverwalk Landing during the first week of May and enjoy “down home blues,” incredible micro-brews and the area’s finest BBQ set against the backdrop of the gleaming riverfront.
