Allergy Hacks for Spring
Spring in Coastal Virginia is a lush, sunny and beautiful time of year, and a perfect time to get outside and explore our many coastal waterways and preserved natural landscapes. Unfortunately, as foliage comes into full bloom, the outdoors can become significantly uncomfortable for allergy sufferers, particularly during the middle of the day.
Those who suffer from seasonal allergies know how challenging it can be to make the most of a beautiful season without becoming ill or congested. If you suffer from itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, congestion or even skin rashes and hives during allergy season, you know how much it can steal spring’s thunder before you even get to enjoy it.
This year, rather than hunkering indoors 24 hours a day, try relieving your allergies with simple home remedies and daily practices. As always, before making any changes to your routine and lifestyle, consult your physician.
Here are 5 allergy hacks we hope will help you to make the most of this wonderful season in Hampton, VA!
Local Honey
Studies show that honey produced by bees can help to combat allergies and alleviate symptoms, by exposing your body and immune system to pollen in small amounts each day. Plan to eat 1-2 spoonfuls a day, and choose local honey to ensure effectiveness.
Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV is highly effective at cleansing the lymphatic system and decreasing mucous and histamine response, helping to alleviate allergy symptoms. While it may not taste as good as honey, it can be highly effective when consumed as 1 tbsp in 8 oz of water up to 3 times per day.
Rinse Off When Inside (Pets, too!)
This may seem obvious, but after spending time outdoors, remove your shoes and clothes. Wipe off your pet’s feet, and consider taking a shower to rinse off any pollen that may have accumulated on your body. Try to bathe your pet more regularly in spring, to keep them from tracking pollen into your home and onto your furniture. You’ll find that taking just a few extra steps to keep both you and your pet clean will go a long way in keeping dust and pollen out of your home.
Keep It Clean
While you’re at it, make sure to wash all linens and towels in hot water regularly in spring to help decrease the amount of dust in your home that can trigger allergy symptoms. Wash pillows, curtains and carpets, and make sure to be thorough with any hiding spots that may be holding onto dust and other allergens.
Avoid Midday Activities
While this isn’t the most fun hack we’ve mentioned, it is fairly straightforward and can go a long way to help you combat severe allergy symptoms. Pollen count is at its highest during the middle of the day and into the afternoon, making it the most uncomfortable time of day for allergy sufferers. Move your daily run to early morning, plan to walk your pup at sunset and try to avoid spending too much time outdoors during midday hours, and keep your symptoms in check, all season long.
